In Africa, Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) has reached alarming heights as human population growth encroaches upon wildlife habitats. With both human and elephant casualties rising, a solution is imperitive.

Since I was a child, I learnt the devastating impact of human activities on wildlife. Today, human population has tripled in the last 50 years to 8 billion, and decimated wildlife population by a staggering 70%. As an animal lover, my passion lies in finding ways to help animals and humans foster coexistence.

This is a volunteer project that I am currently working on together with WWF. Due to NDA, I am unable to disclose details, but do read on for the big picture.

My role

As a key member of the team, I contribute to the project in the end-to-end UX design process. My role involves conducting research, user interviews, UX/UI design, prototyping, user testing, and ensuring the app aligns with the community's needs.

The challenge

Up to 55 elephants are killed daily for their ivory in Africa. Besides poaching, elephants also face habitat shrinkage and degradation due to human settlement and expansion, leading to a competition for land, food and water. Tragically, this results in casualties on both sides, with human retaliation against elephants raiding crops and endangering communities.

How might we find a sustainable solution that enables a harmonious coexistence between human and elephant?

The approach

How might we solve the challenge? Here is how I address the elephant in the room in my design process:

1

Discover

• Research
• User interviews
• Comparative analysis

2

Define

• Persona
• Ideation
• How might we

3

Develop

• User flows
• Design system
• Prototype

4

Deliver

• Usability tests
• Iteration

The impact

I look forward to implement our solution, which will potentially achieve:

Before
⚠️
Clash and threats to safety when chancing upon each other
⚠️
Injuries and deaths increasing for humans and elephants
⚠️
Hostility and fear against elephants
After

Reduces chances of meeting, resulting in improved safety

20% reduction in injuries and deaths for humans and elephants

30% increase in community awareness

The solution

We aim to create a solution to alert people of intruding elephants, warning them to stay away in order to prevent conflict situations.

While I'm unable to disclose details of the project at this moment due to NDA, I am eager to discuss more of my approach and problem-solving skills. Let's connect via the contact details below and discuss how my skills can add value to your team and contribute to positive outcomes.
